On 11 November 2024, our Licensing Committee agreed the proposed new animal welfare policy be released for consultation.

The purpose of the consultation is to provide an opportunity for stakeholders, licence holders and the public to comment on the introduction of an animal welfare licensing policy for Â鶹´«Ã½.

The policy includes details about the possession of certain animals or animal-related activities within Â鶹´«Ã½, which must be licensed by the council. It aims to communicate the council’s priorities concerning animal welfare licensing and includes details of:

  • the activities that require a licence
  • the protection of animals from harm and their welfare needs
  • setting out timescales for granting and renewing licences
  • the legislation which applies to animal licensing, including the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) Regulations 2018; the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976; the Zoo Licensing Act (As amended) 1981 and the Animal Welfare Act 2006

Feedback on the draft policy is invited and aims to raise awareness of the legislation that governs animal activities and wider welfare matters.

Read the draft animal welfare licensing policy in full.

The consultation period runs from 12 noon on Friday 10 January 2025 to 12 noon on Friday 21 February 2025.
